this movie is so fkin good
1 idea
we are condemned to freedom.
all of us are fully responsible for our lives, and until we take note of this fact, we will live in misery.
so many of us are playing a role.
a role of a “good son” or “the proper college kid” or “a waiter in a cafe”.
we suck up to others and please anyone but ourselves, lying to ourselves in the process claiming “we’ve got no other choices” than to fit this role.
and that’s just fucking wrong.
Sartre calls this “bad faith” - the denial of one’s absolutely free condition.
yes, things happen to us.
we take shitty jobs and are born into certain religious groups and get handed a certain life.
but we also choose to suck up to the boss.
we choose to show up to prayer at 11am on Sunday morning.
we choose to continue a certain way of living.
no matter what, we are free.
and we must realize that we can free ourselves from the chains of the past.
in fact - we MUST free ourselves to become who we choose to be.
we humans are lucky.
we choose our defining features.
the things that make us us.
that is a gift.
don’t fucking forget it.
